The Cambodia Trust works with disabled people in Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, mainly with those affected by landmines, polio and leprosy. The core work is in the development and provision of prosthetic and orthotic services (artificial limbs and orthopaedic braces) to disabled people in South East Asia and the training of local specialists to deliver these services.
Cambodia Trust Ireland is an all-island organisation which aims to raise awareness of the problems faced by people with disabilities in developing countries and to support the work of The Cambodia Trust.
Cambodia Trust Ireland (CTI) achieved charity status in February 2008. The aim of CT Ireland is to raise awareness of the ongoing work of the Cambodia Trust in South East Asia – in particular in Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia - and to highlight the situation for disabled people in developing countries with the Irish people and government. CT Ireland will also raise funds for specific projects in Cambodia as necessary.
In recent years CT Ireland has established a Board of Directors and is assembling a group of supporters in the north and south of Ireland who will facilitate the awareness raising and fundraising objectives by organising meetings and events and building up a network of donors, supporters and resource holders in Ireland.
Since the founders of the CT Ireland are comprised of people from north and south of the Irish border, we also aim to link disability, peace and reconciliation with possible post-conflict work – in particular in Timor Leste.
Our priorities are to support The Cambodia Trust in:
- Building local capacity for sustainable, locally-run rehabilitation services for people with disabilities in the developing world
- Developing and delivering rehabilitation services for people with disabilities
- Promoting equal rights
Cambodia Trust Ireland is in the early stages of development and is currently seeking support from a wide range of sources.
What has CTI done so far?
CT Ireland has established a Board of Directors and supporters. Two Patrons have been appointed to date and others who will bring specific skills to the organisation are being appointed. We hold regular meetings North and South of the border – to progress awareness and fund raising activities.
CT Ireland was delighted to have been successful in recently securing funding from the Irish Aid Civil Society Fund for a recent capacity building project at ASSERT.
