Why are we called the Cambodia Trust when we work in a number of countries?

What's in a name...when we established our organisation, the name 'The Cambodia Trust' fitted our work well. Our focus back in 1989 was simple: to make and fit prosthetic limbs for landmine survivors in Cambodia. As our work has developed and grown, and we have expanded into other countries in the region, we have had a number of discussions about changing our name to better reflect the scope of our work. However a number of factors have stopped us from renaming the Trust:

  • In the field of prosthetics and orthotics, the Cambodia Trust is a recognised name.
  • Even on a budget, renaming would cost money.
  • Our Cambodian staff are now playing an important role in sharing their expertise in the other countries where we work. This is a great example of South-South co-operation which puts the expertise we have built in Cambodia at the heart of what we do.

Of course there are arguments for a change of name but for now, we have no plans to do so as we cannot see a benefit to our projects.

Which countries do we work in?

We run projects in Cambodia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Timor Leste.

At our training school in Cambodia we currently have students from Cambodia, Iraq, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, DPR Korea, Timor Leste, the Philippines and Indonesia.

How is our work evaluated and monitored?

CSPO and SLSPO are accredited as Category II training centres by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) and are subject to ISPO evaluation every 5 years in order to maintain this status.

Our projects in Cambodia also hold ISO 9001:2000 certification – an internationally recognised quality management standard which is focused on client satisfaction and continuous improvement of services. CSPO is the only Prosthetics/Orthotics school in the world to hold ISO certification for its education programme and the Cambodia Trust is one of the first NGOs in the world to achieve this standard. As part of our certification under ISO 9001:2000, our work is under constant review and evaluation. The rigorous internal audit mechanism has helped develop a system and culture of continuous evaluation and the measurement of progress against our goals. The regular analysis of data collected through client satisfaction questionnaires, required under ISO 9001:2000, allows us to identify areas requiring improvement. Every 3 years our projects undergo an external audit in order to maintain certification. We have successfully passed two audits to date, in 2005 and 2008.

In addition we participate in evaluation by our funders, such as the British government's Department for International Development.
