Latest News:

Dublin's ever popular Cafe en Seine was the location for the inaugural awareness raising Cambodia Trust Ireland (CTI) event on Thursday the 17th of April. The evening began with an introduction from three of the directors outling the progress made to date with the establishment of CTI and the plans the group have to support the ASSERT project in Timor Leste. Each person gave a brief background to how they became involved in CTI and outlined the particular challenges faced by people with disabilities in the developing world.

The central element to the evening was the showing of the recent BBC film on the work of the ASSERT project in Timor and the wider work of the Cambodia Trust.

The focus of the evening was to raise awareness of the work undertaken by the Cambodia Trust as well as the specific challenges facing Timor Leste. There was a great turnout of over 40 people, mostly friends and colleagues - better known as the 'Coalition of the Willing'! While the focus did not seek to raise funds on the evening, many people signed up to provide support and participate in future fundraising events.

CTI wishes to express sincerest thanks to the staff and management of Cafe en Seine for providing the venue and food (complementary) and to the management of the Arc Cultural Centre in Temple Bar who provided the audio visual equipment for the evening - this was essential in view of the crowd and noise in the main bar downstairs!.

The only thing missing for a most enjoyable evening that continued well into the night was a camera!!

The next event will be held in Belfast within the next few weeks. Details to follow.

General Overview

Cambodia Trust Ireland (CTI) achieved charity status in February 2008.  The aim of CT Ireland is to raise awareness of the ongoing work of Cambodia Trust in South East Asia – in particular Timor Leste (East Timor), Cambodia and Sri Lanka - and to highlight the situation of disabled people in developing countries with the Irish people and government.  CT Ireland will also raise funds for specific projects in Timor Leste and Cambodia as necessary.

To this end, CT Ireland have established a Board of Directors and are assembling a group of supporters in the north and south of Ireland who will facilitate the awareness raising and fundraising objectives by organising meetings and events and building up a network of donors, supporters and resource holders in Ireland.

Since the founders of the CT Ireland are comprised of people from north and south of the Irish border, we also aim to link disability, peace and reconciliation with possible post-conflict work – in particular in Timor Leste.

The organisation is in the early stages of development and is currently seeking support from a wide range of sources.

Ireland's connections with Timor Leste and Cambodia

Ireland has a number of connections with both Timor Leste and Cambodia. The Irish government has consistently supported de-mining projects and reaffirmed Ireland's commitment to support a convention banning the production, stockpiling and transfer of anti-personnel landmines for all time.

The Irish government has a significant commitment overseas aid and Timor Leste is named as one of the priority countries for Irish Aid.

The Irish government plays an active role in creating the institutions of democracy in Timor Leste and is heavily involved in a number of key areas such as poverty reduction planning; public sector management and expenditure; private sector development; gender equality; conflict resolution; governance and human rights.

What has CTI done so far?

CT Ireland now has a strong Board of Directors. Two Patrons have been appointed to date and others who will bring specific skills to the organisation are being appointed.  Two preliminary meetings are scheduled early 2008 - north and south of the border – to initiate the awareness raising activities.  (Details of meetings will be posted on the website).

CT Ireland is applying to the Irish Aid Civil Society Fund for a capacity building project at ASSERT.

An official launch of CT Ireland is planned for September 2008.
